Ceramic and metallic window tints act like a shield that blocks radar and laser signals from coming through the glass. They can drastically impact detection of both radar and laser. Any tint that blocks light will negatively impact laser detection, and dark tints will render the laser sensor unusable. With radar, performance is severely marginalized by metal, to the extent that using a detector becomes much less of an advantage, if it detects at all.
There are a few suggestions in these situations:
- Remove or replace the metallic/ceramic tint on your windshield
- Switch to a custom-installed radar detector system that bypasses the windshield entirely. (More information HERE)
- Many vehicles will have a clear window within the windshield for using an EZ pass system, GPS device or a radar detector. Consult the car dealer for more information about that possibility.
